James J. Snider, MD, Honored at Memorial Event
06/02/2009
Port Huron, MI…At a celebration in his honor, James J. Snider, MD, was memorialized as officials from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital unveiled a unique plaque and announced that mammography center at St. Joseph Mercy will now be called, the Dr. James Snider Mammography Center. With more than 60 friends, colleagues and business leaders in attendance, the event – held on Thursday, May 21, 2009 – was a tribute to a cancer care leader in the community.

“The success of local cancer treatment was the pioneering ambition of one man, James J. Snider, MD,” comments Homeira McDonald, MD, a local pathologist and Chair of the St. Joseph Mercy Foundation. “Dr. Snider not only was a talented radiation oncologist, but – for a quarter of a century – the driving force in providing radiation therapy to our community.”

This special naming celebration of Dr. Snider is the culmination of more than three years of fundraising activity to establish an endowment fund designed to ensure the continued availability of sophisticated diagnosis and treatment equipment at St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron. The event took place in the Mercy Women’s Health Center.

“The Dr. Snider Mammography Center is a wonderful tribute to an outstanding solider in the fight against cancer, especially breast cancer,” comments Peter Karadjoff, St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron President and CEO. “Although Dr. Snider passed away in 2005, his name continues to inspire others in the battle against cancer. This event was designed to honor and acknowledge his commitment to the community.”

“Top of the line linear accelerators with SmartBeam technology, laboratory and other diagnostic equipment such as the most advanced digital mammography in Port Huron are tremendously expensive,” concludes Dr. McDonald. “It is only fitting that we focus this endowment work around the most advanced mammography service in Port Huron through this tribute to Dr. Snider.”
